A ship chandler is a supplier that provides vessels with the provisions, stores, spares and equipment they need, delivering to the ship or quay during a port call. Ship chandling is one of the oldest trades in the maritime economy, and it remains essential: every vessel, however modern, needs to be provisioned and stored regularly, and the chandler is the local partner who makes that happen at each port.
What a ship chandler supplies
A chandler's range spans food provisions, deck and engine stores, cabin and catering supplies, cleaning and safety consumables, and often spare parts and technical equipment. Many chandlers also handle bonded stores and slop chest items. How ship chandling works
The chandler receives a request for quotation from a vessel or its purchasing team, prices the requested items, and sends back a quote. If the quote wins the order, the chandler sources and assembles the goods and delivers them to the ship within the port-call window, against a delivery note signed by the receiving officer, and later invoices for the order. Speed and accuracy are decisive, because ships operate to tight schedules and the chandler who responds first and correctly usually wins the business.

The core service has not changed, but the tools have. Chandlers increasingly use software to read incoming RFQs, match items to catalogue codes, protect margins and generate quotes quickly, so they can handle more enquiries without adding staff and win more of the orders they quote. Efficient RFQ handling is now a competitive necessity in chandling.
Choosing a ship chandler
Vessel operators weigh several things when choosing a chandler: coverage at the ports they call, speed and accuracy of quoting, the ability to work in IMPA and ISSA codes, reliable on-time delivery within the port window, and fair, transparent pricing. Because a late or wrong delivery can mean a ship sails short, reliability is valued as highly as price. Increasingly, operators also value chandlers who can handle enquiries digitally, since fast, structured quoting is a good proxy for how the rest of the service will run. A chandler that consistently quotes quickly and accurately, in the codes the buyer uses, tends to become a repeat supplier at that port, because reliability compounds over many calls.
