The estimated range of time within which a vessel is expected to arrive at a port.

An ETA window is the span of time within which a ship is expected to arrive at a port, rather than a single exact moment. ETA stands for estimated time of arrival, and the reason it is expressed as a window is that voyage timing is genuinely uncertain: weather, sea state, traffic, and berth availability all move a vessel's arrival earlier or later. Planning around a window, rather than a fixed time, reflects that reality.

Why arrival is a window, not a point

A ship crossing an ocean cannot predict its arrival to the minute days in advance. As the voyage progresses the estimate tightens, but until close to arrival the responsible answer is a range. Everyone who serves the port call, agents, terminals, bunker suppliers and ship chandlers, plans against that window and updates as it narrows, so that services and deliveries are ready when the vessel actually berths.

How the ETA window affects procurement

For provisioning, the ETA window is critical. A chandler needs to have quoted, sourced and staged an order so it can be delivered within the window, without spoiling perishable provisions by delivering too early or missing the ship by delivering too late. If the window shifts, the delivery plan has to shift with it. ETD, the estimated time of departure, is when it is expected to sail. Provisioning is planned against all three: goods generally have to be delivered between berthing and departure, so a chandler watches ETB and ETD as closely as the headline ETA when scheduling a delivery.
